Donald Trump and The American Dream

trumpdreamThe question in this meme implies that the American Dream has gone missing. I couldn’t agree more with that particular sentiment.

But the quoted answer is an attempt to highlight the stupidity of the candidate. I don’t think it accomplishes that very well. Mostly because there are far better examples of his stupidity to use than this quick answer in a public forum.

But partly because the American Dream, or more accurately, the successes that the American Dream is modeled after, aren’t the result of policy.

What is the American Dream and where has it gone?

From Google:

American Dream
The American Dream is a national ethos of the United States, a set of ideals in which freedom includes the opportunity for prosperity and success, and an upward social mobility for the family and children, achieved through hard work in a society with few barriers.

But this is only part of the picture. The definition above is the a categorical description of what it takes for continual economic growth and besides the requirements already listed, large and ever increasing amounts of cheap energy are key to making the equation work.

Trump cannot answer intelligently on the subject because that would require revealing that the American Dream can not be brought back in any way, shape or form because the cheap energy is gone. Or maybe he doesn’t have the faintest clue about what really made America, “exceptional,” and bullshitted his way out of it.

This meme must die because you cannot highlight somebody’s stupidity based on a bullshit answer to a bullshit question.

The ideology of those that love the Trump is predicated upon the idea that the American Dream is not only alive but would be super charged if we could somehow get the government and its regulations out of the way of free trade, individual freedom and the, “magic hand,” of the market.

That couldn’t be further from the truth.

The Insulting Notion of Earning a Living

fukdI do get the point of this meme and it has a little bit of truth to it.

No Jobs

It correctly identifies that the current economy has no place for most of the people who are currently unemployed or under-employed.

Only economic growth can, “create,” jobs and economic growth requires parallel growth in the amount of natural resources consumed.

The economy has stopped growing in any meaningful way because the key natural resources that support our current size (fossil fuels) are becoming depleted and cannot be replaced.

Why No Jobs?

The meme also seems to correctly identify the reason that there is so little room for human workers in the economy. That is automation through technical innovation.

Why This Meme Must Die

Because it suggests that more automation is the solution. Automation is really just the process of replacing human labor with fossil fuel powered machines.

If the economy were a car speeding towards a cliff, this meme seems to suggest that we try to go even faster towards it so that maybe instead of falling to our death we’ll magically take off and never have to worry about gravity again.

The economic system implied by this meme is definitely a possibility but could only function for a very brief moment in history due to the gigantic amounts of energy it would require.

It could be argued that the system has already been attempted and resulted in what we have today.
